Domhnall Gleeson has joined ‘the dark side’.

The Irish actor will play General Hux, a cruel leader of the New Order, in JJ Abrams’ upcoming blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

And Gleeson certainly looks the part in a fresh batch of new photos from the Star Wars set.

The images show him trussed up in a military-style coat, frowning while a stormtrooper waits cautiously behind him.

Other images show Kylo Ren, Rey, Captain Phasma, Finn, and a new look at old favourites R2-D2 and C-3PO (right).

The film will be released in December of this year.

Gleeson had not seen the original Star Wars films before he joined the cast.

However, he was a childhood fan of the prequel films.

“I went back and watched them all on a big screen after I got cast,” he said.

“That made me incredibly excited about it. I loved every second.”

Some of the upcoming sci-fi flick was shot on UNESCO World Heritage site Skellig Michael, off the County Kerry coast. The filming took several days and the island features briefly in the film. “It was a fantastic moment for Irish film,” James Hickey, CEO of the Irish Film Board, said. The Star Wars 7 photos come from Entertainment Weekly’s cover story.
