Sean Penn will not apologise for 'green card' gag at the Oscars
Sean Penn has insisted he has "absolutely no apologies" to make over the immigration joke he cracked during last month's Oscars ceremony.
Penn, who was presenting the Best Picture award, made waves when he opened the envelope and asked "Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?" before announcing the winner as Birdman, directed by Alejandro Inarritu.
"I found it hilarious," said Mexican-born Inarritu after the ceremony. "Sean and I have that kind of brutal relationship where only true friendship can survive.
"I make on him a lot of tough jokes that I will not tell you."
Penn has remained largely silent on the topic, but did speak of it at the weekend.
"I'm always surprised by flagrant stupidity. I keep having more hope," he said of the widespread outrage over his joke.
"I have absolutely no apologies. In fact, I have a big f*** you for anybody who is so stupid not to have gotten the irony when you've got a country that is so xenophobic.
"If they had their way, you wouldn't have great filmmakers like Alejandro working in this country. Thank God we do."
