Saoirse Ronan and Michael Fassbender early front-runners for Oscar glory
The Academy Awards may be over six months away but two Irish actors have already been tipped to take home golden statuettes.
Carlow-native Saoirse Ronan and Kerryman Michael Fassbender are both believed to be hot contenders for 2016 Oscar gongs.
Ronan's (21, inset) performance in Colm Toibin's Brooklyn won praise at Sundance and industry insiders suspect she will be shortlisted for the Best Actress category.
The screen star acts alongside Domhnall Gleeson in the film, which tells the story of an Irish immigrant torn between two love interests.
Saoirse, who has been listed as a favourite for the gong alongside the likes of Cate Blanchett and Charlize Theron, was first nominated for an Oscar back in 2008 at the age of 13 for Atonement.
Fassbender (38) has also been tipped for the Best Actor gong for his role in Justin Kurzel's take on Macbeth, which also stars Jack Reynor.
It would be Fassbender's second nomination for the prestigious awards in three years after losing out on the Oscar for best supporting actor to Dallas Buyer's Club's Jared Leto in 2014.
Fassbender, who is currently filming X-Men: Apocalypse in Canada, has also reportedly signed on to continue his role as Magneto in future X-Men films.
According to Heroic Hollywood, the actor is set to resume the part in future films after playing the villain in three of the latest productions in the franchise.
Speaking recently, Fassbender didn't rule out starring in more of the superhero blockbusters.
"I'm not sure [about more X-Men films]," he told MTV. "All of us signed on for a three-film deal, so we'll see."
While the nominees are not announced until January, movie site Indiewire have listed both Irish actors as hot favourites for next year's awards.
