VERDICT: The whole thing ends up a messy pastiche.

THE ARMY OF CRIME

VERDICT: While the underlying storyline may be simplistic, the film has great heart.

VERDICT: Has the feel of a costume drama made for television.

THE CRIMSON WING

Nature documentary. Narrated by Mariella Frostrup.

PLOT: On a volcanic lake in Tanzania thousands of flamingos raise their young.

VERDICT: Flamingos aren't as cute as penguins but the photography is superb.

VERDICT: Disappointingly twee American roadmovie.

Drama. Starring Calum McNab, Paul Anderson, Daniel Mays.

VERDICT: Lacks the gritty realism of its TV film predecessor.

Comedy/Drama. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart.

VERDICT: Perfectly pitched between the serious and silly -- if you don't love this, you have a heart of stone.

Comedy/Drama. Starring Meryl Streep, Amy Adams.

PLOT: A New York civil servant cooks her way through a cookbook.

VERDICT: Disappointing, except for Streep.
