Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle is making his next film about a mountaineer who cut off his own arm.

The Oscar-winning film-maker is planning 127 Hours, based on the ordeal of climber Aron Ralston.

The 34-year-old became a celebrity after amputating his arm with a Leatherman tool when he became trapped under a boulder in Utah's Blue John Canyon in 2003.

Courage

Aron's story -- told in his 2004 book, Between a Rock and a Hard Place -- has fiercely split opinion.

Sympathisers have billed it as an extraordinary tale of courage and determination. Others have berated him for failing to tell others of his plans beforehand and being ill-equipped.

Boyle will start production next year with the team that helped him the Best Director Oscar for Slumdog.

The Notebook actor Ryan Gosling has been linked with the lead role.
