Friends star Courtney Cox made new pals in Derry this week - after visiting a jewellers in her fiance's home town.

Although the 50-year-old Hollywood actress and her other half Johnny McDaid of Snow Patrol fame popped into the shop during their visit, they weren't tempted to buy any wedding rings.

The famous pair, who are scouting for top Irish wedding venues, got engaged last month.

Staff at the D Cooley jewellery shop were gobsmacked when the actress popped in for a browse with her fiance along with her 10-year-old daughter Coco.

The pair were happy to pose for pics with staff before going into a gift shop next door, where staff gave Courtney's daughter a gift of a four-leaf clover.

Cooley's employee Erin Kearney said she spotted the celebrity couple walking down the street and invited them in to hear the story of the Derry Ring.

"We just told her all about the ring and how it features Derry landmarks and symbols," she said. "She bought her daughter gold earrings then went into the gift shop next door."

Stunned schoolgirl Niamh Campbell asked the Cougar Town star if she liked Derry and Courtney told her how she was enjoying it and that "the weather is great".

And despite all her millions, Courtney proved she's a down-to-earth girl at heart. The pair flew over to Derry from London on Ryanair.

The couple will spend time with McDaid's family in Derry as well as taking in the sights.

The actress and 37-year-old McDaid jointly announced their engagement on Twitter in June, after six months of dating.

McDaid's Snow Patrol band-mates have given the actress their seal of approval.

Drummer Jonny Quinn was full of praise, describing her as a "down-to-earth, lovely person".
