DIRECTOR Neil Jordan has revealed that Kevin Costner (inset) wanted to play the Big Fella in his Michael Collins movie when he first approached the studio.
He also said he knew nothing about Collins when he decided to make the movie.
Jordan said that, while he had studied early Irish history in college, he "never had that much interest in these stalwart figures".
When he first started to do research he found he didn't like the man, fearing he was like Mussolini. "The interesting thing about Collins is that in the end he did not become that."
The director said the movie may never have been made had it not followed his blockbuster Interview With A Vampire, saying he believed Hollywood was simply humouring him after his hit.
