The two were taking a morning stroll when he popped the question.
"It was really romantic and a complete surprise," Claire told the Herald.
"He's from Tipperary but he stayed up in Dublin this Christmas. We went for a walk first thing in the morning and he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was totally surprised."
Once she'd said 'yes', the pair made their way to Claire's family home to share the news. "We went to my parents house and we told them straight away. They were delighted -- my mum was over the moon," she said.
"It was lovely because we were all together; my sister had just flown in from London, so it was a really special moment."
Claire and Trevor have been together since they met in DCU. The pair graduated in 2002.
"We were both studying journalism, and we've been together since then," Claire explains.
If everything goes according to plan, the pair will be exchanging their vows this summer.
"We'd love to get married in late summer. We'll have to check everyone's availability but that would be a beautiful time to do it.
"Trevor is back at college," Claire explains. "He's studying History and English, so we'll have to see how he's fixed."
Claire says she has no idea what her wedding dress will look like but can't wait to throw herself into the bridal world.
"I've never had the dream wedding dress idea," she says. "But I just want to enjoy the whole process. I think that's the fun part -- trying on the dresses, tasting the cake. All of that."
