Stars lap up a purrfect opening night at Cats

THE stars were out last night for the premiere of Cats The Musical which kicked off its Irish tour at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre.

Actress Charlene McKenna, Paul Harrington and his wife Karol Sadlier and Love/Hate actress Aoibhinn McGinnity were among those at the Dublin opening.

They were joined by RTE presenter Diana Bunici, Blaithnaid Ni Chofaigh, Fair City actress Aoibhinn Garrihy, Mary Kennedy and Ken Doherty and his wife Sarah at the gala event.

Irish musicial theatre star Susan McFadden took the lead role of Grizabella in a cast which also included an uncle of Hollywood actor Colin Farrell.

Paul Monaghan, who is also Colin's godfather, plays the Edwardian gentleman-of-leisure cat Bustopher Jones. A-list actor Colin is the son of Paul's older sister Rita.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical follows the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles faced with the task of deciding which cat will ascent to the "Heaviside Layer" and come back to a new life.

Cats is the second longest-running show in Broadway history, and the fourth longest-running West End musical.

The award-winning musical is running in Dublin until September 7.
