Soccer star Tony wins Celeb Bainisteoir title
SOCCER legend Tony Cascarino has been crowned the 2011 Celebrity Bainisteoir.
Thousands turned out to see Cascarino (49) land the top spot after beating his competition, former Green Party TD Paul Gogarty, in the final of the RTE series on Friday night.
Cas and his Killeshin GAA players edged out over Gogarty's Oughterard side in a thrilling extra-time battle at Dublin's Parnell Park over the weekend.
The closely fought match saw both teams tie on the final whistle, at an even 0-12 to 0-12.
For the first time ever in the series, the match went to extra time and after 20 minutes, Tony's team pulled ahead to bag the title. The final score was 0-18 to Killeshin to 0-15 to Oughterard.
Speaking of the win, a delighted Cascarino said of his Laois players: "The team played their hearts out and put in an amazing performance.
"Throughout the whole series the players and the club put in so much hard work, the win is a great testament to them. As their Bainisteoir, I am so proud of them and thrilled we are bringing the cup back to Laois."
Fellow celebrities who took on the challenge in the latest instalment of the hit series included Gillian Quinn, PJ Gallagher and Amanda Brunker.
The tournament final is broadcast tonight at 6:30pm on RTE One.
