Nikki and her new fiance soak up the sun in Florida for the festive season

joy: DJ delighted when beau proposed

NIKKI Hayes has jetted off to Florida to spend Christmas celebrating her recent engagement with her family.

The Spin FM presenter (34) was "over the moon" after her other half, soldier Frank Black, got down on bended knee and surprised her with a proposal at a Donegal hotel this month.

And given that her mechanic boyfriend has been stationed over in the Lebanon for the past six months, they finally have the chance to celebrate their good news this week.

Her mum relocated to Florida a few years ago and Nikki was keen for her to get to know her fiance better with a trip over to the Sunshine state.

"Frank still hasn't met some of my family properly so we're going to spend Christmas in Florida and catch up with them all, which we're really looking forward to," she said.

The smitten pair flew off to America a week before Christmas as they took advantage of the soaring temperatures over there as they made the most of their trip.

They have been busy sight-seeing and chilling out as they seal the deal on their recent engagement.

"It's been 28-30 degrees since we got over here, we're having a brilliant time," she told the Herald.

"I'm bringing Frank to down Maples Bay to do a dolphin-watching cruise and to get some seafood. My sister and her kids are also going to take him out to the Everglades so it's all going great."

She and Frank have been dating for nearly two years but she said she was gobsmacked when he decided to get down on bended knee a few weeks ago.

He had been planning the proposal from his base over in the Lebanon before coming back to Ireland and whisking her off for a romantic weekend. They checked into a luxurious suite in the five-star Lough Eske castle in Donegal where he popped the question in the hotel's tower.

"I was just oblivious to everything. I was walking up the steps of the tower to have a look over the lake and I turned around at the top and he was down on one knee," she said.

CHAMPAGNE

"I literally couldn't speak for about 10 minutes, I was so shocked. It was completely unexpected. He had gotten the whole tower blocked off and it was all lit up with candles. It was lovely and romantic and there was lots of champagne for us that night."

But she said there's "no rush" for them when it comes to setting a date for their wedding.

They have lots of plans for the New Year, which include moving into a new house together in Dublin and adopting another rescue dog.
