Cheryl brother held over PO raid

Cheryl Cole's drug addict brother has been arrested in an investigation into an armed raid on a post office.

Andrew Tweedy (29) was one of five people being held, including a woman, after the robbery in which thousands of pounds was taken in Newcastle.

Police launched the hunt after two men wearing balaclavas entered the post office, and waved a gun and a machete at staff and customers before demanding the cash and fleeing.

No shots were fired, and there were no injuries, but two terrified customers ran to a nearby shop in shock.

Shop owner Priya Mishra said: "One ran into the back and hid. Another started saying something I couldn't understand. She was in shock." The following day a man in his 30s was arrested beside a busy road in Newcastle when a fleet of police cars forced his car to stop.

His car was surrounded by armed officers and he was removed at gunpoint.

It was after the first arrest that police then swooped on a number of addresses in Longbenton, including that of Cheryl Cole's older brother Andrew Tweedy.

A police spokesman said those arrested were being held for a variety of offences in connection with the raid.

"A vehicle and firearm have been recovered and we are pursuing lines of inquiry," he said.

Tweedy has previously spoken about his shame at letting down his 26-year-old sister Cheryl.

He even missed her wedding to Chelsea footballer Ashley.
