Alec Baldwin advised Charlie Sheen to seek help and apologise to his former bosses
Charlie Sheen has been given a rare rebuke for his public meltdown by his fellow actor Alec Baldwin.
Sheen, 45, was last week fired from Two and a Half Men, his CBS series, for his erratic behaviour since causing £4,000 (€4,600) in damage at New York's Plaza Hotel after a drug-fuelled night last October.
He has appeared unstable during a string of television interviews and other public appearances in America in recent weeks, but has repeatedly insisted that he is "winning".
In an open letter to Sheen, whom he described as a "drug-addled, porn star-squiring, near-Joycean internet ranter," Baldwin advised him to seek help and apologise to his former bosses.
"Sober up, Charlie. And get back on TV, if it's not too late," Baldwin wrote on The Huffington Post. "Beg for America's forgiveness. They will give it to you. And then go back. You are a great television star."
Sheen prompted sharp criticism by making allegedly anti-Semitic remarks about Chuck Lorre, the creator of Two and a Half Men, in the wake of his sacking.
"Take a nap. Get a shower. Call Chuck," Baldwin wrote. "Go on Letterman and make an apology".
He also advised Sheen to "write a huge cheque to the B'Nai Brith," a group that tackles anti-Semitism.
The advice from his colleague came after bullets and an antique gun were confiscated from Sheen's Beverly Hills mansion during a raid by police.
