A dull evening for 'red carpet' style
WIHLE movie buffs eagerly anticipate the winners and losers at major award ceremonies, such as last night's Golden Globes, most of us can't wait to critique the red carpet style -- or lack there of.
Originality in the fashion stakes was noticeably absent this year, with a bizarre penchant for mermaid-style dresses, reminiscent of debs attire from the late '80s and early '90s.
This is a look that can work if a) you have curves in all the right places (see Sofia Vergara) and b) you don't go OTT and allow the tail end of the dress to overtake the wearer (main offenders include Madonna (above), Elle MacPherson and Tina Fey).
As usual, some stars played it safe by opting for black (Julianne Moore) while gold (Jessica Biel), monochrome (Kate Winslet) and plain white (Kate Beckinsale) were also prevalent.
There were, however, some mavericks. Tilda Swinton danced to the beat of her own funky fashion drum in a floor-length, sky-blue dress with matching jacket in satin.
Heidi Klum, also known for her experimental taste, got it bang on this year with a backless cream sheath dress with turquoise detail.
