Research activity in Irish third-level institutions has almost doubled since 2000, according to the first report from the team overseeing the Government's strategy for science, technology and innovation.

The report also shows that more than 40% of the 114 new projects agreed by the IDA last year were based in research and development.

So far, the Government has invested ?1.4bn in the seven-year strategy, which was unveiled in June 2006.

Tanaiste Mary Coughlan says there is still a need to invest further and to encourage young people to study science and engineering at third level.
