Standards commission says no basis to investigate Ahern
Tuesday July 29 2008
The Standards in Public Office Commission's annual report for 2007 has reiterated its view that there is no basis for an investigation into Bertie Ahern's acceptance of gifts and loans in the 1990s.
Last September the Standards Commission concluded that complaints made against the former Taoiseach relating to when he was the Minister for Finance did not warrant an investigation.
In its annual report published today, the Commission said the payments were either outside the scope of the relevant legislation or didn't breach it.
The report also states that electoral legislation aimed at providing transparency in relation to party funding and expenditure is not achieving its aim.
