Gardai are investigating a fatal house fire which killed a 47-year-old man.

The blaze broke out at the terraced property on Connaught Street, Athboy, Co Meath, at around 11.30pm on Wednesday.

The alarm was raised when passers-by saw smoke coming from the single-storey house.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and discovered the man's body inside. He was taken to Our Lady's Hospital in Navan where he was pronounced dead.

An empty house next to the property was destroyed in the blaze while the roof of a third house was damaged.

A garda spokesman said the scene has been preserved for a technical examination.

"At the moment it doesn't appear to be suspicious but investigations are continuing," he added.
