Friday June 13 2008

The Referendum on the Lisbon Treaty has been defeated by a margin of 53.4% to 46.6%.

Only 10 constituencies voted in favour of the treaty - Carlow-Kilkenny, Clare, Dublin North, Dublin North Central, Dublin South, Dublin South East, Dun Laoghaire, Kildare, Laois-Offaly and Meath East .

The President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said while the Commission would have hoped for another outcome, they did not view the result as a vote against the European Union.

Ireland's EU Commissioner Charlie Mc Creevy has echoed this sentiment, saying the EU will not grind to a halt because of today's vote.

President Barosso has said joint approach will be needed to move on from here.
